The Correct Way To Increase Your Vocal Range

Everyone, including singers use their chest voice for typical speaking. In fact, your speaking voice can teach you a lot about your singing voice. The way you use your speaking voice could either help or hinder your singing voice.

Let's take a look at your speaking voice. Try producing various non-speech sounds: laugh, cry, yawn, sigh. If you have a piano or pitch pipe around, find the closest pitch to the sounds you made. Now speak a number of monosyllables: uh-huh, mm-hum, aha. Again, find the matching pitch on a piano or pitch pipe.

Now speak a few basic sentences, such as "my name is_____" or "I love to sing". Once again, try to find the matching pitch. Ideally, the pitch ought to be the same for speaking as it is for monosyllables as well as non-speech sounds, but many people try to speak at a lower pitch than is natural for their own voice. This is not a healthy thing to do.

Go on exploring your voice by speaking monosyllables at different pitch levels on a piano. Find the lowest pitch you can say without sounding gravelly. The gravelly sound is called "vocal fry" that is not healthy to sustain. Your ideal speaking pitch must be about four to five steps over your vocal fry level.

Next, read a paragraph aloud. Test out higher speaking pitches to see how high you could go. Along the way, note exactly where your voice is most comfortable and where you begin to hear and feel strain.

When using your "chest voice", you will feel vibration (resonance) in your upper body when producing tones in that pitch selection. Place your palm lightly on your upper chest, with your thumb and fingers resting on the collarbones. Do a yawn-slide (exhale on the syllable "hee" or "hoo" while moving from the top of your range to the bottom). Your hand must feel vibration as you slide down into your chest voice.

Even though it feels like the resonance is occurring in your chest, it's in fact taking place in your throat and mouth. The vibration you are feeling is the result of air moving from your lungs and across your vocal folds.

An easy low-range singing exercise is the fifth slide. Beginning in the comfortable middle part of your range, exploit the buzz (puckered lips vibrating as air is expelled) or a syllable such as "vaw" to sing the beginning pitch and slide down five steps. In the key of C major it would be G-C, so-do. The slide should be even, not bumpy or creaky. Commence each repetition a half-step below the previous one.

Should you feel creaky sensations as you descend the scale, you are probably experiencing tension. Temporarily pause and carry out some face and neck relaxation exercises. Gently massage your face and throat, and then try again. As you descend the scale, close your mouth slightly from its starting position.

Next, sing an octave range up and back down, once again using the buzz or "vaw". As you go up the scale, allow your jawbone to drop and your mouth to open a bit wider, then reverse that as you come back down. It is useful to imagine your tone on a path leading away from yourself, together with low notes nearest and high notes farthest away. Maybe even move one hand away from your body as you ascend the scale and also back to your side as you descend.

The arpeggio is another helpful exercise. Sing do-mi-so-do-so-mi-do on a vowel tone, such as "oo", "ee", or "ah". Start every new arpeggio a half-step less than the last. Just like you have been taught to do in your singing lessons.

As with any kind of singing technique, adding to your lower range will take time and effort.
