Kitchener-Waterloo A Vibrant And Diverse Area

The Kitchener-Waterloo area in south central Ontario is right there with the fastest expanding and most economically vibrant areas in Canada. Kitchener is the biggest municipality in Waterloo Region and the seat of the Waterloo Regional Municipality. In 2006 the the number of people in Kitchener was was just under 205,000. The City of Waterloo located right next to Kitchener has has just under 100,000 residents. In addition Waterloo has in excess of 20,000 seasonal post-secondary students attending its universities and regional colleges. The two cities are located side-by-side and as a unit are typically called Kitchener-Waterloo or K-W.

Cambridge, the other major city in the area is found in the south eastern part of Waterloo Region with a population of right around 120,000. Cambridge was formed in 1973 by the amalgamation of the municipalities of Galt, Preston, Hespeler and Blair. Many local residents resisted this amalgamation, considering it a "shotgun marriage" pushed on them by the Province of Ontario.

In the first decade of the new millenium The Region of Waterloo is right up there with the most vibrant and diverse areas in Canada with some of the best agricultural land in Ontario, two well respected Universities, a very stable financial and insurance sector, diversified industrial production and a rapidly expanding high tech sector centered around Research in Motion and other spinoff companies from the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University.

Families thinking about settling in the Waterloo Region will find excellent employment opportunities, a diversified cultural life, and unmatched educational facilities. K-W real estate is also considerably less expensive than similar properties in other major cities such as Toronto or Ottawa.
