Helen Beatrix Potter -- The Time Honored Children's Author

Beatrix Potter whose actual first name was Helen, was a great English author and also illustrator who was best known with regard to her children's books featuring anthropomorphic figures such as in the youngster's classic - The Tale of Peter Rabbit.

Beatrix was in fact born into a privileged household where she was taught by governesses and thus spent her youth isolated from other youngsters. She had numerous pets and spent vacations in Scotland and the Lake District where she developed a love of the scenery, flora and fauna, all of which she carefully observed and painted. Her parents didn't ecourage her intellectual advancement as a young woman, yet her study and also watercolors of fungi led to her being broadly respected in the area of mycology.

In her thirties, Beatrix Potter released the highly successful children's book, The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Around that time she got secretly engaged to her publisher Norman Warne. This triggered a breach with her father and mother, who did not approve of her marrying someone of lower social status. Regrettably though, Warne died ahead of the wedding.

Ultimately Beatrix Potter began writing and illustrating children's books full-time. Using the proceeds from her publications, she grew to become financially independent of her parents and was ultimately able to purchase Hill Top Farm in the Lake District. She extended the property with other acquisitions over time. In her forties, Beatrix married William Heelis, a local solicitor. She ended up becoming a sheep breeder and farmer whilst continuing to write and illustrate children's novels. In total she released twenty-three books.

Beatrix died on 22nd December 1943, and left the majority of her property to the National Trust. Her books carry on selling well around the world, in a wide range of languages. Her stories have been retold in various formats including a ballet, films, as well as in animation.

Such is her recognition, and that of the characters from her publications, that many Beatrix Potter figurines were created. These Beatrix Potter figurines which feature just about all the characters in her publications have grown to be very collectable as well as valuable.
